British Gas recently released statistics that suggest the financially beneficial potential behind using fully electric cars in comparison to gas-based cars.

According to the statistics, EV drivers could save up to £1,700 ($2,645) by using a typical 2.52 kW solar panel system.

This system, which costs approximately £11,500 ($17,893) to install, would end up costing the average 12,000 mi/yr driver about £5 ($7) per 1,000 miles compared to a gas car, which would cost about £150 ($234.)

Feed-in tariffs
Along with the lower operation costs, the British government provides feed-in tariffs (FITs) for about £1,000 per year to those who use solar.

Between this FIT and the fuel costs averted, five years of owning an EV would result in about £13,500 ($21,005) saved, £2,000 ($3112) more than the system originally cost to install. In five years, British Gas argues, such a solar system could pay for itself.

According to EnergyEfficiencyNews.com, Dean Keeling of British Gas Smart Homes stated, “Through solar-generated energy, our customers can significantly cut their fuel costs. Solar-charged vehicles have real potential on our roads.”

In accordance with their findings, British Gas has partnered with Nissan and the Nissan LEAF in order to start installing home charging units for the electric vehicle. The company also has a variety of other solar options for its customers.
