Public solar EV charging arrives in Minnesota

solar-ev-stations-st-paulTwo new solar-powered EV charging stations officially went online today in St. Paul, Minn.

St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman, Congresswoman Betty McCollum, Xcel Energy, Commissioner Paul Aasen and other local officials unveiled the solar EV charging stations in Como Regional Park.

“Today, customers can not only plug in their EVs, but they can plug into a clean solar resource. That’s an exciting first,” said Judy Poferl, president and CEO of Northern States Power Co.-Minnesota, an Xcel Energy company.

Located at Como Lake and McMurray Fields, the public solar EV charging stations are the first of their kind in Minnesota, though HOURCAR car sharing has had a couple of proprietary solar EV charging stations in place for more than two years. Powered by the sun, they generate no air pollution. The solar charging stations have the capacity to charge two vehicles at a time.

An artist's rendition of one of the 16 solar EV charging stations I-GO plans to build in the Chicago area.

I-GO CarSharing, a nonprofit car sharing organization based in Chicago, has officially announced the locations where it will build 16 solar EV charging stations. Once completed, the solar EV canopies will boost the total number of solar EV charging canopies in the U.S. by 10 percent or more.

In addition to officially announcing the locations of 16 future PV + EV charging stations I-GO has added three all-electric vehicles to its fleet—two Mitsubishi i-MiEVs and a Nissan LEAF, a move that the nonprofit says makes it the first Chicago-area car sharing organization to offer all-electric vehicles to its members.

“We’re excited to be adding these vehicles to I-GO’s fleet, and to have finalized agreements for all 16 solar canopy electric vehicle charging station sites. This project exemplifies I-GO’s commitment to innovation in carsharing and to providing our members with the most fuel efficient vehicles available,” said Sharon Feigon, CEO of I-GO.

Solar-powered EV charging stations continue to go up at a faster and faster rate here in the United States, and increasingly in other countries as well, including, as we note below, Australia, which recently saw what some news reports claim is the country’s first solar EV canopy.

In fact, while keeping track of all the solar-powered EV charging stations going up in the U.S. was relatively easy when we started SolarChargedDriving.com about 2 ½ years ago, now they’re going up so fast that it’s impossible for us to keep track of them all, though we continue to try :-)

Here’s our latest news round-up on new solar-charged EV charging stations.
