Cut the earth a break: Solar-charge an EV

global-warming-2010editors-blog-entry3In case you missed it – and you might have if your primary news outlet is anything like The Denver Post, which buried this news in a one-paragraph brief on page 13A – 2010 officially tied 2005 as the warmest year on record globally, according to a report released by the National Climatic Data Center.

And 2010’s tie for the warmest year globally is only a small part of the increasingly clear global warming picture:

  • Last decade: Warmest on record.
  • Nine of the earth’s 10 warmest years have occurred since 2001.
  • All 12 of the warmest years have occurred since 1997.
  • 34 consecutive years in which the global temperature has been above average.
  • An unmistakable upward trend in the earth’s global temperature since records first began being kept in 1880.

Poll: Global warming

How concerned are you about global warming?

Basically, as Bill McKibben, whose book Eaarth we recently reviewed at SolarChargedDriving.Com, puts it, we have a story of unprecedented proportions unfolding, one which, quite literally, affects everyone on the planet, and it barely makes it into The Denver Post.

Ok, so The Denver Post doesn’t have a tremendous amount of global relevance. And we know our audience is a worldwide one -- though most of you are concentrated in the U.S. and Canada.

The point here isn’t so much about what The Denver Post is, or isn’t doing, in terms of covering an historic story of truly global proportions. It’s about the reality of global warming.

Time for action is now
It is, to quote McKibben, here right now. And if you’re inclined to believe McKibben and the thousands of scientists around the world who tell us there is a clear link between rising global temperatures and humanity pumping CO2 into the atmosphere for the last century and a half at an ever quickening pace, as, indeed, we are, then you know we’ve got to do something about what we’re doing to our planet – the only home we’ve all ever known -- right now.

There are a lot of things you -- and we – could be doing. But, given that our gig here is solar-charged driving, we’ll make our traditional specialty pitch here: Ditch your gas car (s) for an EV (or two) and power it with electricity generated by a home solar system!

No, it won’t change things on its own. And it certainly won’t change them overnight. And, no, it’s not near enough to turn things around.

But it is a concrete action that can help and, if taken by enough people around the world, one that could have a significant impact on the health of the planet, not to mention, global humanity itself.

(See pages 2A and 3A, ‘Mudslides deadly in Brazil’, ‘Australia’s floodwaters crest, leaving destruction in their wake’, and ‘Snowstorm buries Northeast’ in the same Denver Post issue in which news about a warming earth is buried, for evidence of what global warming might be doing to the earth, and humanity, already).
