Seven of the 10 largest companies as ranked by Fortune magazine are oil companies -- and an eighth, Toyota Motor, is an auto company.

Every time you tank up, you are likely putting more money into the pockets of quite literally the largest international conglomerates on earth.

That's right, seven of the top 10 companies in the Global Fortune 500 are oil companies.

Now, maybe you're OK with a lot of your money going to the richest companies in the world. Maybe you're OK with those companies controlling how much you pay to fuel your car and with your total lack of fueling independence. And maybe you're even OK with the questionable environmental track record of many of these firms.

Then, by all means, head down to your local self-serve station and, as we say in the U.S, 'fill-er-up'.

But, if you're like me -- and you're not OK with some, or all, of these things -- think about switching your form of transportation, and thereby adding fueling independence and greener driving to your lifestyle.

In other words, consider switching to sunlight (or, really, sunlight-generated electricity) as your form of fuel, and to a plug-in vehicle, such as the Nissan LEAF, which, in the U.S., will cost just $25,250 after a $7,500 Federal Tax Credit.

Pump up with sun -- and pump up the green economy as well as your auto-fueling independence -- along the way!
