Save American democracy: Fuel your car with sun

Money you spend on gas goes directly into the coffers of Big Oil, which can now spend limitlessly to quash green legislation.

editors-blog-entry3 Here's another one for the list of reasons to make our next car an electric one and power as many of the miles we drive in our EVs as we can with electricity generated by renewable energy:

The recent Supreme Court decision which allows corporations to contribute unlimited sums of money to political candidates.

Virtually every cent you pay for gasoline goes into the coffers of giant oil companies like Chevron, BP and ExxonMobil. And they'll do anything they can to ensure we continue our addiction to oil until the very end of oil (which is very definitely coming!).

Do you really want to be putting your money into the pockets of Big Oil, whose profit margins typically dwarf those of any other industry, and which has, so far, shown extremely little interest in promoting renewable energy, and in fact has often worked to thwart the growth of solar and wind?

I didn't think so.

The roughly $745 million Barack Obama raised to run for President -- the most money raised by any candidate ever to run for office in the U.S. -- is dwarfed by the $45 billion in profits a single company, ExxonMobil, made in 2008.

Because we know hard numbers are often the most convincing ammunition, here's something to chew on:

We might not be able to stop Big Oil in the political arena (though efforts are underway to do so, for more, go to http://www.credoaction.com/). However, we can stop them at the gas pump -- by buying an EV, putting solar on our homes (or wind turbines in our yards if we live in a place where this makes sense), fueling our cars with renewable energy we produce ourselves, and never again making another trip to ExxonMobil, or Shell, or Chevron, etc.

Poll: Solar-charging

What is the most enticing reason to solar-charge a car?

Actions speak louder than words, but words -- and the laws made out of them -- do matter, so please consider going to the CREDO action page and signing on to a petition that insists that Congress, and President Obama, take action to prevent the corporate (Big Oil) takeover of American Democracy.
