Record heat the norm in U.S., globally

Share

editors-blog-entry3The heat records just keep on falling locally, nationally, and regionally. Colorado – where SolarChargedDriving.Com is “headquartered” ;-) -- and Wyoming just experienced their warmest summer ever. This past summer was the third warmest ever in the continental U.S.

And, of course, the continental U.S. recently experienced its warmest 12-month period – July 2011 to June 2012 -- ever.

The heat’s on not only in the U.S., but globally. A record portion of the arctic ice cap melted this summer and some scientists are saying that the arctic could see its first complete melt in history within the next five years.

climate-change-tempsThe big picture
Nine of the 10 hottest years on record globally have come since 2000, with the only outlier being 1998. And each year for the past 35 consecutive years has been warmer than the global average.

The evidence of global warming – which the vast majority of scientists say is largely human caused, thanks to our prolific consumption and burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and, yes, natural gas – is clear. If only more of us would wake up to the evidence before it’s too late.

And, no, this isn’t about the earth – which, in the long term, is completely indifferent to what we humans are doing to it and which will far outlast human beings. Nor, is it really, in the end, about the polar bears in the arctic.

No, global warming is about the impact on human beings – the very serious impact on human beings and the very possibly radically shortened future of global humanity.

If that’s not enough to wake us up to what’s going on, and the crucial need to make dramatic changes – most notably in terms of the vast amounts of fossil fuels that we’re burning, I’m not sure what is.
